How can we, by posing questions to each other, articulate in words our bodily memory and thereby recall sensuous experiences and tiny sensations, we did not know we carried with us? 

Join us at O—Overgaden when researcher in cognition and teacher of micro-phenomenology at Interacting Minds Center at Aarhus University, Katrin Heimann, in conversation with artist Helene Nymann dives into the micro-phenomenological interviewing technique also referred to as “psychology’s microscope”.

This specific interviewing technique is rooted in phenomenology. It is a method that can be used for research projects, in the artistic process and in particular in the public sphere, to reach the finer layers of a sensuous experience.

Nymann has used the method in her research project and in her work with the exhibition at O—Overgaden. Among other things Nymann has unfolded new perspectives and understandings of the dancer’s experiencees when performing for the film piece in the exhibition. The findings will contribute to Nymann’s research project with new understandings of memory and experience.

The talk will be in English and the admission to O—Overgaden is as always free of charge.

Participate in a 1:1 micro-phenomenological interview session

If you yourself are curious to try a micro-phenomenological interview, it is possible to sign up for a 1:1 interview in the exhibition at O—Overgaden on four Tuesdays during the exhibition period. Helene Nymann and other researchers from Interacting Minds Center at Aarhus University, will conduct micro-phenomenological interview sessions of 40 minutes duration.

At the talk you will meet:

Katrin Heimann (DE) is trained in philosophy (M.A) and cognitive neuroscience (M.Sc and PhD) and is currently working and teaching as an Assistant Professor at the Interacting Minds Center at Aarhus University. Her methodological focus lies on methods to work with subjective experience, in particular micro-phenomenology, which she uses to explore playfulness, aesthetic experiences (with a focus on audio-visual productions and film) and their relation to sustainable development of an individual and society as large. Katrin is passionate about considering and developing science as an investigative intervention. She is part of the Experimenting, Experiencing, Reflecting Team of the IMC and work package holder in the Horizon 2020 grant ARTIS (Art and Research on Transformation of Individuals and Society) which explores and co-creates transformative art experience.

Helene Nymann (DK) is educated at Goldsmiths, University of London and Malmö Art Academy. Knots of Ecphore is part of her PhD: “Memories of Sustainable Futures: Remembering in the Digital Age” at the research institute Interacting Minds Center at Aarhus University, which comprise extensive research into bodily knowledge, memory, and memory techniques. Nymann has exhibited in Denmark and internationally at New Museum (US), ARoS (DK), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (DK), and MACRO — Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Roma (IT).
