Line Finderup Jensen: No Exit Prior To Orientation
1 Apr – 21 May 2022

On this page:

With her exhibition No Exit Prior To Orientation Danish artist Line Finderup Jensen approaches her own hospitalization at a psychiatric ward. Rather than just being a personal story about the course of an illness the exhibition distances itself from the artist and her inside to investigate the systems and authoritarian positions we grant objective truth value. By using virtual reality among other things, Finderup Jensen dislocates our notion of reality and allows for the participating audience to engage in her attempt to renegotiate the “true story”.

With a light-blue mottled vinyl floor, pale yellow walls, and the mandatory generic plants of a waiting room the audience is invited into to Ward:801 – a total installation which is both a physical fabulation around the architecture and atmosphere of psychiatry and a virtual recollection of Finderup Jensen’s memory of the ward. By way of the VR glasses the audience is invited to step inside Finderup Jensen’s personal, simulated memory where you’ll meet the ward, its staff and other patients. For a short while you’re as close to becoming Finderup Jensen as technology allows for, yet simultaneously the experience of the work is absolutely subjective and fictional.

In the back room the video installation What If I’m Not An Übermensch? towers up around the audience in an oval circle of ten screens. Here, the animated faces of ten white coated persons appear and in turns they read from Finderup Jensen’s hospital record. This record works as a key document for the entire exhibition whose “factual” references are infringed by Finderup Jensen when she questions the record’s entitlement to be considered a truth document. Because who owns the story of such a course? The hospital or the patient? And what power does memory have confronted with the power of diagnosis?

Line Finderup Jensen (b. 1991, DK) holds an MFA from Akademie der Bildende Künste in Vienna (2019) and Glasgow School of Art (2018).
